Tentacular

Cafe de l'Industrie, Paris, 11.

If I had a grading system for the places I visit, this bar would certainly be graded ‘dangerous’, as in ‘I could spend endless hours of nothingness here’. The bar sprawls out into several back rooms, the dozens of tables and chairs create an open sea of possibilities. The warmth of the décor (indefinite but familiar) makes you feel that only the present matters.  Its tentacular extension into several restaurants (!) next door and across the street do not prevent it from keeping its neighborhood hangout identity.
Or perhaps I was just under the spell of the beautiful, smiling waitress with the most sugary accent I have ever heard. In case you are curious about stuff to do while you are there: decent whisky selection, nothing-special cocktails, bistro menu and the surprising possibility to have a conversation without hearing a word the 60+ people around you have uttered.

Cafe de l'Industrie. 15, 16, 17 rue Saint Sabin, 75011 Paris.
Open 10:00-2:00 am.

  2. Could not agree more about the decent whisky selection. You can get a thick glass of pure malt (one of those unsurprisingly robust beverages your body and soul need sometimes) for less than 10 euros. Nothing less than a challenge in a bar so close to the crowded and well-known Bastille.

  3. Carlito: no need to make a list for your visit to France. I'll be your guide.
